A fundamental ingredient in robust Southern cuisine is the country gravy recipe, often known as sawmill gravy or white gravy. It can be served with a platter of warm, freshly made biscuits for breakfast or as a creamy topping for chicken-fried steak. This meal is a simple down-home favorite that comes together in only 15 minutes.
Ingredients
- 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
- 2 Tablespoons Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
- 1 Cup milk
- ¼ Teaspoon salt
- ¼ Teaspoon pepper
Instructions:
Add oil to the drippings in the skillet after removing the cooked meat from the pan or skillet. Add flour while scraping off any brown particles. Stirring frequently, cook the mixture for 2 to 3 minutes over medium-high heat, until it turns light golden brown.
Add milk and stir. Stirring continuously, heat over medium-high heat until thickened and boiling. Add extra milk, a tablespoon at a time, to thin out the gravy if necessary. Add salt and pepper and stir.
